Calgary, Alta. (January 31, 2018) – Sam Mulligan (Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club/Vancouver, B.C.) is the first Canadian to step on the podium at the 2018 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Davos, SUI. Mulligan finished just +0.02 seconds from first-place, ending the day with a silver medal.

Attending the World Junior Championships is an important milestone in the development of our next generation athletes as they prepare for future World Cup and Olympic competition. Medalling at the World Junior Championships is regarded as a milestone for athletes, who often end up as podium-contenders on the World Cup circuit.

Today’s downhill was a unique race with two runs, rather than a traditional one-run downhill. The 20-year-old was sitting in third-place after his first run and moved up a spot to finish in second-place. This is Mulligan’s first FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships podium after a fourth-place result in the super-G last season.

“I’m really happy with today’s performance and the conditions were great” said Mulligan. “It was a tight race today. Thank you to my team mates for pushing me!”

Jeffrey Read (Calgary, Alta.) also cracked into the top-ten today, finishing in sixth-place, just +0.26 seconds back from first-place. The top 14 athletes today were within one second of each other, showing how tight the competition is.

Rounding out the Canadians in the top-20 were Cameron Alexander from North Vancouver (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) in 17th-place, Simon Fournier (Mont-Tremblant, Que.) in 18th-place and Riley Seger from North Vancouver (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) in 20th-place.

The ladies’ raced a slalom today and one Canadian made the top-20. Stephanie Currie from Osler Bluff Ski Club in Collingwood Ontario, finished in 19th-place.
