Kristina Natalenko battled multiple injuries this season, missed a month of training and broke her right hand just four days before the BC Winter Games where she finished 4th in slalom, 5th in GS and 7th in ski cross. She worked hard to achieve this great result at the K1 Provincials!  "Indeed, it was a very rough season of mine, but I was able to recover just in time for Provincials (still not fully recovered, my right hand is still broken), said Natalenko. "It was a really fun race to be in, compete with the best racers from all over the province. And it was a tight race, a very competitive one as well which made it even more exiting. I am looking forward to the next race."

Katie Fleckenstein earned the overall provincial title with a terrific three-day performance. With a last name like Fleckenstein, you know it wasn’t just the luck of the Irish that propelled her to two gold medals in the slalom on St. Patrick’s Day. Even though Katie couldn’t see the next gate didn’t mean she missed the pot of gold. Making the feat more impressive is that the morning stubby course felled a quarter of the pack through disqualification. And let’s add the fact that Katie’s night time sleeping accommodations consisted of a “cozy” window seat. The second day’s GS rewarded Fleckenstein with two bronze medals, with a 5^th place finish on the last day’s SX. Fleckenstein summed up her experience, “I've been looking forward to provincials since last year. I've been working hard on slalom this year, and even though the 2 SL's were short relative to what we train at Whistler, they were a good test. The GS course was great, with lots of tricky terrain. The skier cross on the last day was tough because we had inspection, a training run and a race run. I'm pretty tired, but really happy, and I had a fun time with my teammates and friends."

Finn Iles was somewhat conflicted during this alpine racing competition. In his own words, he saw his “worlds collide” as the ski provincials were scheduled for the same weekend as his hockey team’s provincial tournament. But with true pragmatism, he tackled each challenge and brought home four gold ski medals and an overall title, leaving before the SX to join the Whistler Winter Hawks in Quesnel. “Wow, I’m not sure I thought I would do as well as I did, it is not exactly how I thought it would happen, but I’m really happy. I knew that I had to likely miss the Ski Cross (which I love to race) so I was really happy to not have to make a choice to stay or go based on my results after the SL and GS races. I was on the ice at 8:00 on Monday morning and we won our game 10-2. Right now, I’m feeling really lucky to have had the chance to compete in both provincial championships.” (Finn kept his golden touch in that first game, scoring one goal and earning three assists. So far, the Hawks have won all three of their games and are in the semi-finals.)
