 • RACE NOTICES
At current time race notices must be emailed to Keven Dubinsky (kevend@bcalpine.com).  Within the next week or two our Club Admin Database will be updated to allow you to submit race notices directly through the website, but due to calendar updates the system is currently requiring some upates before it is fully functional again.  Thank you for your patience.

 • NEED EVENT VOLUNTEERS?
Following last year's request for a volunteer signup option through the BC Alpine website, we have updated the Club Administration system to allow your club to request volunteers for any BC Alpine calendar event that your club is hosting.  Simply click the VOLUNTEERS button under RACES / CALENDAR in the BC Alpine Club Admin Database and follow directions to have volunteer requests up on the BC Alpine Website.  This is a fully automated system which adds the event to the front page of the BC Alpine website for maximum exposure, as well as updates the calendar so that people know you are looking for volunteers.  The form then collects the volunteer's data and sends it to the email address of your choice.

 • SNOW STARS TRAINING COMMENCING THIS WEEKEND!

The first Entry Level Academy is taking place this weekend in the Coast Zone at Whistler.  Attendance is better than expected and it promises to be a huge success.  Registration for the Entry Level Academies in the Okanagan, East and West Kootenay and North Zones is still open! (see below)

BC Alpine is conducting Snow Stars training - “Entry Level Academies” - for all Alcan NGSL and K1 coaches. This is an excellent opportunity for all coaches (also highly recommended for K1 coaches) to start the season with an understanding of the new, and much improved, Snow Stars program which was re-designed by Alpine Canada and Mark Sharp. This training is mandatory for all BC Alpine clubs planning to use the Snow Stars program within their club.

Entry Level Academies, one in each zone:
Okangan   Dec. 10-11, 2005  Apex
Kootenay Dec. 17-18, 2005  Kimberley
North    Dec. 17-18, 2005   Smithers

To register contact your ANGSL Zone Represenative:
Coast - Suzanne Brumec

East Kootenay - Scott Blissett
North - Cara Nelson
** BC Alpine will be responsible for the training of the Academy leaders and will cover all expenses for Entry Level and K1 coaches to attend. This includes travel expenses, lift tickets and accommodation for out-of-town coaches only.

ODDS & ENDS
 • AN UNEXPECTED HONOR FOR ONE OF OUR OWN.

A panel of Microsoft judges reviewed all submissions and selected the top five candidates from across the country for their “Microsoft Canada TechNet Innovation Award“. The award recognizes Canadian IT professionals who have gone above and beyond the ordinary and made a positive impact using Microsoft-based technology.
Due to his work within the non profit sector in BC Alpine, the Canada Games programs as well as many other volunteer projects in the IT field such including the Alpine Ski Racing Live-Timing program (which Alpine Canada uses) Keven Dubinsky of BC Alpine has been selected as one of Microsoft’s Top 5 finalists for the Microsoft TechNet Innovations Award!
As of November 22nd, voting will open to select the top candidate who will win a prize package from Microsoft Canada worth $3000 which includes $500 donated in their name to the Children's Miracle Network. We hope all those who know of Keven's work in this province will help him out by going and casting a vote for him between Nov 22 - Dec 31 on Microsoft's website: www.microsoft.com/canada/technet/innovationaward5
Way to go Keven!

 • WAX DAYS
Alpine Canada Alpin proudly announces the fourth season of the Pontiac GMC Ski Wax Days to be held across the country in support of Canada’s local ski clubs and future Olympic athletes.  With ski season just around the corner, local ski clubs across Canada are inviting ski and snowboard enthusiasts to bring their equipment to the Wax Day in their area. For a small donation, amateur alpine ski racers will wax their skis and snowboards.  Last year more than 1000 skis and boards were waxed, rising over $30,000 for the ski clubs. This year, the goal is to wax 1500 skis and boards! Open FLYER to find out when and where you can attend a Wax Day in your area.
 • S - A - M = SPONSORS - AWARDS - MEDIA
Have you appointed your club's S-A-M coordinator yet?  The S-A-M coordinator is responsible for contacting Sponsor representatives, organizing Awards ceremonies and working with the Media before, during and after a race event.  Of course the S-A-M can enlist the help of others to lighten the load and ensure that every job is covered, but it's important to select one individual who will coordinate and oversee this VERY important program.  Please send an email to Kathy Stahr at skiboss@bcalpine.com to let us know who your S-A-M coordinator will be for the season and how we can contact them (phone, email, etc.).  If you don't have a copy of our S-A-M booklet outlining the goals and all the "how-to's" of the S-A-M program, let us know and we'll send one to you right away.  Questions??  You can call Kathy at 604-737-3071.
 • CANADA GAMES FAST TRACK ATHLETE GRANT

The Canada Games Council (CGC) and the Foundation for Athletes Sport Training (FAST) have partnered for the second year in order to deliver the Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant.  The program will provide direct financial assistance to Canada’s next generation national team athletes to support their training and competition needs.  The grant is designed to fill a gap in Canada’s sport system and support Canada Games-level athletes who are targeted and on the pathway to excellence at the national team level.

The Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant will award a minimum of 60 grants for $2000.00 each to next generation national team athletes across Canada.  The eligibility criteria and selection process set out below as well as the information received by the applicant on the enclosed application form will be used to determine grant recipients.  Athlete performance over the last two competitive seasons will be used as a key indicator for identifying recipients.
Athletes will complete an application form and must return it to the Canada Games FAST Track Selection Committee.  Once the Selection Committee has received all applications, the committee will approach the NSOs and/or P/TSOs for endorsement and verification of information on applications.  Incomplete application forms will be deemed ineligible and will not be processed. The deadline for application receipt is Friday December 9, 2005, 5:00pm EST.  Please see the following program guidelines for information on eligibility criteria.

 • NANCY O'NEILL, WOMEN'S TEAM COACH, CHECKS IN FROM PANORAMA
Panorama is in excellent shape – especially for training this early in the season!  The BC women’s team is skiing here for 10 days prior to travelling to Colorado for the Nor Am technical events. This will be the first time at the Colorado Nor Am races for any of the girls on this year’s provincial team.  The idea is to give them exposure to a high level of intensity right away ... and to get them into the start gate environment early. After Colorado we will return to Lake Louise for the Nor Am Downhill, then on to Panorama for the Nor Am Super G. We are all excited about using “Old Timer” for the Nor Am Super G and the Panorama technical events.  By the way, the recent Fitness testing in Calgary was a huge success with all four girls achieving personal best results!

Women's Team:
Danielle Poleschuk (Fernie)
Alison Leighton (Whistler)
Danielle Robson (Whistler)
Lindsay Kraft (Vernon)
 • MEN'S TEAM REPORT BY DALE STEPHENS AND GLENN THOMSEN

Although the snow was a bit late arriving in Panorama, training has now begun and the conditions are good. Both the “Show Off” and “Old Timer” runs are open and in great shape. The early season speed training will be done on “Old Timer” – beginning this week we’ll train Super G with the Canadian Men’s and Women’s teams. Following a week of training at Panorama, the BC men’s team will move on to Lake Louis to forerun the World Cup men’s downhill event. This is a good opportunity for some very high quality downhill training while watching the best skiers in the world both on and off the hill. This is excellent experience and preparation for the Nor Am downhill event held on the same track just two weeks later.  Everyone’s happy to be back on snow with several important races coming up in the very near future.

Men’s Team:
Dustin Fraser (Mt. Washington)
Matt Holler (Whistler)
Ben Chaddock (Whistler)
Trevor Conroy (Whistler)
Jonathan Hadley (Whistler)

 • FIS B2B UPDATE BY ANDREW LAMBERT, HEAD COACH

The FIS B2B athletes are currently preparing to embark on their final camp of the preparation period.  This will take place November 19th to 26th at Nakiska and Canada Olympic Park.  During this camp, the goal is to raise the group’s intensity, train full length courses on more challenging terrain and to begin race simulation, including timing.  Our sport psychologist Karen MacNeill will also be joining us during the camp to work with the athletes individually, focusing specifically on goal setting and competitive strategies. Following this camp, the athletes will begin the process of integration with their club programs.  The majority of the group will head directly to Panorama with their clubs for a speed camp to prepare for the Lake Louise and Panorama Nor Am races.  From there it's off to Lake Louise to begin the competitive season and see for the first time how far our group has progressed throughout the summer and fall.

OFFICIALS
 • OFFICIALS CHAIR REPORT BY BRUCE HOLLIDAY

After a busy fall of meetings and updates, now the real stuff begins!  A reminder to all ROC's; remember to fill out the volunteer duty spreadsheet and forward to bholliday@telus.net; this is so all volunteers have their work history tracked.  To all race administrators; the "F" factor numbers for calculating the points has not changed from last season. The numbers are:  DOWNHILL - 1320;   SUPER G - 1050;   GIANT SLALOM - 870;   SLALOM - 600. Be aware of the changes necessary to results before submitting to ACA Points - namely making sure all athletes with foreign competitor numbers are deleted.

The new race forms should be posted on the BC Alpine website under "Officials" by the end of this week. If not, please be patient - they will be posted shortly. As well, a generic race form will be available by the end of this week. If you have a race notice that has to get posted, use "word" to make one, send to Kevin at  results@bcalpine.com and he will get it posted. For clubs hosting FIS races, the forms are different and are available from the FIS website - www.fis-ski.com - under “Alpine Skiing”. The assigned FIS TD will have a CD with all the necessary forms and documentation. Recommendation is not to wait for him/her to arrive, but to download before hand.

There is a new look to the race calendar; one that incorporates all the info pertaining to the race. Simply click on the event on the calendar for the specifics.  As TD assignments are confirmed, the names will be posted on this page, thus allowing ROC's to see who the TD is. This will also include the FIS and Nor Am assignments for BC.  An email notification will be sent to the all ROC's with the assigned TD's for zone races and the respective contact information.
Any club wishing certification courses should contact their officials zone rep to arrange. The contact information is in the BC Alpine Green Book.

There is a new manual available this year - "Level 2 Addendum". This is a compilation of job descriptions, roles and duties and some necessary components to host a race. Although it does not contain "everything", it is a good resource manual and will be mailed to all clubs (one per club) from the contact information in the Green Book. Any club wishing more can obtain them by contacting offchair@bcalpine.com.  Along with the manual, a video of the setup instructions for the Barry Cordage safety will be included for all clubs hosting GS, SG or speed camps. These clubs will be receiving safety to be installed for their event.

Finally, thanks to all who took advantage of and attended the fall meetings. We hope they were informative and helpful.
