 • CANADA WEST SKI AREAS ASSOCIATION ALL AREA PASSES

It is time to apply for the 2007/08 All Area Passes and the updated forms have been posted online. Due to increased FIS numbers, BC Alpine will only be accepting applications from registered FIS athletes and their coaches. Both athletes and coaches must be registered through the BC Alpine Club Admin / Registration System in order to qualify for All Area Passes, so please make sure the club registrar has all athletes AND coaches showing online. Due to quota restrictions, some applications may not be successful.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applicants should print off the All Area Pass Form and fill it out entirely. The completed form should be sent to your club along with two passport sized photos and a cheque for $480 made payable to your club. Clubs will collect all the All Area Pass Forms and verify that the applicants are either registered FIS Athletes or full time travelling coaches. The club will then send BC Alpine a completed All Area Pass Club Reconciliation form along with the individual All Area Pass Forms, photos, and a single club cheque for the entire amount of the passes applied for.  Deadline for submission to BC Alpine is October 1, so make sure you get the paperwork in to your club nice and early!  Verify that we have received your form by checking the All Area Pass Received List.

 • J1 DEVELOPMENT TEAM PLANS FOR FALL 2007

Congratulations to Sarah Elliot (Big White Racers) and Madison McLeish (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) who were invited by BC Ski Team Head Coach Nancy O’Neill to join the BC Team girls for a training camp at Farnham from August 29 to September 6.

The rest of the J1 Development athletes travelled to Invermere for a dryland camp during the same time period.  From Invermere, some of the J1’s head up to Farnham for a GS and slalom camp from September 7 to 14, where they will benefit from training along side the provincial team men and women.  After the Farnham camp, the athletes will return home for some rest, a little school work and another individual dryland training block. The following athletes will be at Farnham with the J1 group:
Jen Meyer (Whistler Mountain Ski Club)
Michael Cadman (Whistler Mountain Ski Club)
Ian Deans (Big White Racers)
Isaac Penn (Whistler Mountain Ski Club)
Curtis Koepke (Big White Racers)
James Rose (Windermere Valley Ski Club)
Patrick Taillefer (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) and Ryan Hotte (Mt. Washington Ski Club) are at home recovering from minor injuries.

The J1’s who did not ski at Farnham will spend some time at home and school following the Invermere dryland camp before heading off to a multi-discipline ski camp in Portillo, Chile (www.skiportillo.com) with the BC Ski Team athletes from September 21 to October 7.  The following athletes are going to Chile:

OFFICIALS
 • BRUCE HOLLIDAY REPORTS - PREPARING FOR THE NEW SEASON

As we begin another ski season, the Officials Program has some exciting things planned and a few changes on the “horizon”.  First, as part of the fall meeting at the Holiday Inn in Vancouver, Ted Savage of Precision Timing will be in attendance on the Sunday – October 14 – to facilitate a timing presentation. This is intended for all clubs and their respective timing folks/crew.  Also attending will be the TD’s. Registration will be 8 am, with the session beginning at 8:30 am. To help offset the costs, a nominal registration fee of $40 will be collected at the door – cash or cheque only please.  This is a must for all those involved in the timing aspect of a race. Send your intention to attend to Bruce Holliday at bholliday@telus.net.  Seating will be limited, so register now.

There will be a level 3 course in Vancouver at the Sport BC Building on Saturday and Sunday, November 10th and 11th (http://bcalpine.com/news/article/?1305).  See the BC Alpine website calendar for registration details, course instructors and their contact information.

Race forms for ROC’s will be updated on the website once all the final FIS changes are ratified. Stay tuned for their posting.  A reminder:  everyone should be covered by the ACA insurance policy when working at races. In order to obtain this insurance, one needs to become a current member of a BC Alpine club. This applies to TD’s as well. The reliance on special clubs or waivers is being discontinued.

As for changes in the Officials Program, after many years of involvement, numerous courses taught and countless races officiated, Noel Villard has announced he will be moving on to other volunteer activities. Noel’s contributions to the sport of alpine skiing and the Officials Program go beyond words, and he leaves a well established, and in some cases a large legacy. The strength of the program is due to efforts made by Noel. A mere ‘thank you’ does not seem enough, but on behalf of the Officials Program and myself, we offer you a well deserved and heartfelt THANK YOU and we wish you much success in your future endeavors. We hope to continue to see you at races and on the snow.  Also moving forward with new endeavors is Pete Engstad.  Although he is not leaving ski racing altogether, Pete will be heavily involved in the disabled program with Alpine Canada, but has promised he will be setting time aside to continue officiating at Division and other able-bodied events.  Again Pete’s dedication to our sport and the Official’s Program cannot be overemphasized!  We extend our sincere gratitude to you, Pete, for all your hard work, time and contributions and we wish you continued success and happiness in your new roles. Both Pete and Noel will be greatly missed.

Stepping into the large shoes left by Pete is Bob Cowden. Bob will take over and coordinate the TD education part of the program. I am sure Bob will welcome your support.  As well, yet another change, Mark Armour will take over as the Official’s Chair. Mark has been involved in the program for a number of years and has been looking after the level 3 courses. He will be transitioning between now and the fall meetings as he becomes more comfortable with the new position and everything it entails. Again, Mark will appreciate all your support.  Thanks to Mark and Bob for stepping up and getting involved.  Thus the Official’s committee will have somewhat of a new look – Mark Armour as the Chair, Bob Cowden as the TD Education coordinator, Irene Whitney as the level 1 and 2 education coordinator, Borre van Doorninck as the Coast Zone rep, Dave Webb as the Kootenay Zone rep, Michael Wells as the North Zone rep, and the Okanagan Zone rep to be announced.

With five World Cups, a full division schedule of racing and other activities, it promises to be a season with little time to sit back and observe. There will be plenty of opportunities to become involved, increase your knowledge, expand on your experience, and most importantly, have fun and meet new people. Stay tuned to www.bcalpine.com and the E-Updates for further details.

ARNE LUND PROGRAMS UPDATE
 • REPORT FROM KINDER CAMP AT FARNHAM GLACIER
“Our Farnham camp has been fantastic – we’ve averaged about 15 runs per day per athlete!  We have been pushing the kids and testing their limits with a combination of free skiing and gate training.  By focusing on adaptability with a strong core, balance and constant movement, we have gained mileage and seen significant improvements.  We have taken advantage of the hill space and have trained a variety of courses from ‘stubbie’ and ‘brush’ courses to full gates.  We began with a slalom focus and the first two days were spectacular - even with a late start due to weather on our third day, we managed to complete 4 timed runs and finished off the forth day with some great slalom skiing.  Farnham and CODA brought in a third snow cat (used instead of a lift) for a couple of days, which really improved the turn-around time!  For our dryland component, we have worked with the Alberta freestyle team on the trampoline and made good use of the new spin bikes and balance equipment.  We have also hiked to a number of local lakes with the Alberta K2’s and our guide Nate, who is the lead safety guy on the glacier.  The group is working so well as a team – lots of improvements in focus and attitude since Mt. Hood!  Having been together for three camps over the summer has turned them into quite a team.  They are supportive of each other while at the same time, challenging and pushing one another to try harder and ski faster.  By the way, the food is incredible and we are bulking up for speed!“

 • TRAVEL ASSISTANCE THROUGH BC FERRIES AND SPORT BC
BC Ferries and Sport BC are pleased to announce their new corporate partnership. BC Ferries and Sport BC recognize that travel is often a barrier to amateur sport teams as they seek competitive opportunities for their athletes. In order to assist in removing this barrier, a new program, Sporting Life on the Coast, has been developed to provide travel support to Sport BC member organizations and their member clubs. Through this exciting program, BC Ferries and Sport BC will assist with ferry travel costs for athletes, coaches and officials.  For application and information, click HERE.

 • INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO ANALYSIS - LEVEL 1 COURSE

PacificSport Fraser Valley will be hosting the Introduction to Video Analysis - Level 1 Workshop on Saturday September 15th from 8:30 to 4:30 at UCFV in Abbotsford. This one day session which will be taught by Dr. Allan Wrigley will include over two hours of hands on learning experience and basic biomechanics. Dr. Wrigley will share his experiences of working in the field and will also be available to answer questions with regards to using video analysis in your chosen sport.

Course Description: Video analysis is becoming one of the most widely used teaching tools for enhancing the performance of athletes.  Currently, not all coaches are capable of using video analysis due to a number of factors which may include: lack of knowledge, inadequate equipment, unsure what to look for, time restrictions, lack of a support person, environment, level of athletes, etc. The goal of this workshop is to educate coaches on how to maximize their time and enhance performance feedback through effective use of video technology. Topics covered will include: How biomechanical principles drive performance analysis, choosing the right video equipment and video analysis best practices from taping to review.
