 • NICK BRUSH GUIDES VISUALLY IMPAIRED WORLD CUP RACER

Nick Brush of Panorama, a former Windermere Valley Ski Club racer, is living his dream on the World Cup Circuit as Guide to Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team star Chris Williamson of Markham, Ontario.  This dynamic duo has been virtually unbeatable in Para-Alpine World Cup competition so far this season in the men's visually impaired category.

We asked Brush how this all came about. “Well, it was quiet unexpected,” he told us. “I received an email in late March 2007 from the head coach of the team at the time asking if I would like to come to Whistler for a couple of days to try guiding a blind skier.  I tried it and really enjoyed it.   We skied well together so they offered me the job as Chris Williamson’s guide.”

We were curious about the differences between racing as an individual skier and racing as a pair.  Here's what he had to say: “Skiing with a visually impaired racer is a lot different from my racing days, yet very much the same too.  The most obvious difference is that now I have another skier right on my tails and I can’t touch any of the gates, so in slalom, I’m skiing the whole course ‘old school’.  Chris does the cross-blocking which allows him to run the course straighter and faster.  As for our training, it’s a lot like when I was racing except that I am traveling more (Europe right now) and we have a lot more staff to help us ski our best!  The whole World Cup experience has been very exciting and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”  SEE PHOTO

 • CANADIAN SKI COUNCIL JOINS FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Helping Children Get Active with the Grade 5 SnowPass - This winter, the Canadian Ski Council and its partner resorts across Canada are once again taking a stand against childhood obesity through the Grade 5 SnowPass program. Designed to help kids stay active through the long Canadian winter, the SnowPass program offers Grade 5 or ten-year-old children up to three free days of skiing or snowboarding at each participating ski area in their region. "We want children to learn that you can have fun while being active in the wintertime," says Colin Chedore, President of the Canadian Ski Council. "The Grade 5 SnowPass is not only a great program for the kids, but it helps make it affordable for the whole family to get out and enjoy a day on the slopes."

 • 2007/08 ENTRY LEVEL ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS

Submitted by Joanna Magee, Entry Level Development Director for BC Alpine
As coaches, we encourage athletes to become adaptable ski racers, training them so they have the skills to subtly change their technique or the way they ski in order to meet the demands of the constantly changing terrain on the race/ training course or free ski run.   We encourage the athletes to push their limits with regards to technique and skill, with the ultimate goal of trusting one’s ability in order to go faster. (Drills to help develop adaptability: working on how much an athlete can put their ski on edge, experimenting with extremes such as how far can an athlete lean inside before they fall and inside ski turns to name a few examples).  Promoting adaptability was one of the main goals of the K1/K2 summer and fall B2B camps along with, of course, a strong technical base and physical fitness.   Although I had been actively encouraging adaptability all summer long to the B2B athletes, I had forgotten about the importance of being adaptable as a coach.  Click HERE to read more.
