Thank you to Maureen Clarke from the Mt. Washington Ski Club for sending us this news release:
Mount Washington, Courtenay, BC Canada March 18-20, 2011 - With over 700 cm of snow and two of three challenging weather days – the host mountain for the Teck K1 Provincials came through with flying colors. The three day event had a total of 160 athletes from around the Province competing in ten races, two Giant Slaloms, two Slaloms and one Kombi for each sex. It was a huge event that could not have been pulled off without the help of hundreds of selfless local volunteers, including local favourites, the Mount Washington “Marmot Workers”, who also worked at the Olympics. The event ended on Sunday under beautiful blue skies and unlimited ocean and island visibility.
Results were nothing but spectacular with Amelia Smart of the Vernon Ski Club winning quadruple gold. Host Mountain athlete Kole Harle of Campbell River brought in a double gold performance in the Men’s Slalom and GS events. Gold in the Men’s GS and Slalom also went to Ryan Moffat of the Big White Racers. Reece Howden of the Apex Ski Club had fantastic results placing 2nd in the Men’s Slalom, 2nd in the Men’s GS and 3rd in the Men’s Kombi. Callum Hicks of the Revelstoke Ski Club turned in a banner performance with a 3rd place finish in the Men’s Slalom and a gold medal in the Men’s Kombi.
Laura Swaffield of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club demonstrated her consistency with double silver in the Ladies Slalom, 2nd place in the Ladies GS and 2nd place in the Ladies Kombi events. Also of Whistler Mountain Ski Club was Alex Uryga placing 2nd in the Men’s Slalom events earning double silver. Ella Alfonso of the Big White Racers came away with a double bronze in the Ladies GS.
The host mountain athletes turned in stellar performances on their home soil with Top 10 finishes for Liam Gilchrist, Logan Frame and Maja Nymann. Mount Washington athlete Keegan McCooey finished just shy of top 10 with a 12th place finish in the Ladies Slalom. ~ Maureen Clarke
