U14 Teck Race Series January 10-11, 2015 - Hosted by Whistler Mountain Ski Club
Usually by this time of year the Coast Zone racers have had at least one race under their belts. This year’s slow start with snow pushed the series to mid-January but that did not seem to quash the enthusiasm of the athletes. For some of the racers we were told that the Friday training session on Whistler, whether in gates or TFS, was their first meaningful day on snow.
This year’s race series was a bit different not having the U16’s in the event. With 3 Slalom races it meant that the racers were getting a nice amount of starts which was awesome to see. The enthusiasm of the kids cheering around the start tent was contagious. There were 51 girls and 54 boys entered in this series and Saturday had two – 1 run Slalom’s and Sunday had one – 2 run Slalom race. The kids and vollies certainly didn’t get any breaks in weather on Saturday with the fog hanging around all day. The race pressed on without a hitch and the Saturday races were exciting with some very impressive results considering the first race of the season. The girls 1st race had Maja WOOLEY in 1st, Gigi KRANJC in 2nd and Arabella NG rounding out the WMSC podium. WMSC skiers filled the 4th to 8 positions with Ava LANGEVIN in 9th and Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON in 10th – both girls from Mount Washington. The boys first run had Nathan ROMANIN in 1st, Kieran HARLEY in 2nd with Skylar BEAUREGARD completing the podium. This race saw some great representation from Seymour, Grouse, Cypress and Mt Washington to complete the Top 10
The girls 2nd run on this day was an exact replica of the top 3 in the 1st race. The lone girl that upset the WMSC Top 10 sweep was Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON securing the 5th spot. The boys 2nd run saw Nathan ROMANIN in 1st, Blair NELLIS in 2nd with Eric SMITH in 3rd. Once again the balance of the Top 10 saw some great representation from the other clubs including 4 of the Top 10 from Grouse.
Racing on Sunday was quite different from Saturday. The fog had lifted, visibility was great from start to finish and the snow conditions were perfect for racing without any notable differences in snow conditions from the first 10 girls to the last 10 boys. Thanks to some decisions made by Dale Stephens of WMSC the Dave Murray National Training Centre was perfect for racing. This day saw a traditional combined Slalom race and the kids delivered.
The girls combined race was a thriller and had a common theme with the other races. Top spot went to Maja WOLLEY, Gigi KRANJC in 2nd and Rosie SMITH in 3rd. WMSC had 7 of the Top 10 spots with another great showing by Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON from Mount Washington securing 5th spot.
The boy’s race was also very exciting with some great athletic moves and some huge lessons with course inspection. Just like the girls, the boys saw some familiar names in Nathan ROMANIN securing 1st and Eric SMITH in 2nd with Tait JORDAN in 3rd and completing the WMSC podium sweep. Grouse had 4 of the Top 10 spots. In this race we saw a very impressive spread of 6.87 seconds between Nathan and Eric. We tried to get a quote from Nathan but we couldn’t catch him.
