The city of Port Alberni and the Mt. Washington Ski Club are in the midst of final preparations for the BC Winter Games, set to go February 26th to 29th. BC Alpine announced the final roster of 88 K1 athletes (age 11-12) who will represent their zone at the premier K1 ski racing event of the season.
The Games, which are put on by the provincial government every second year, have the goal to give young, developing athletes the opportunity to improve their skills on their way to higher levels of competition and to deal with the excitement, triumphs and defeats of participating in a major multi-sport event. The Games are an important talent identification event and for many athletes the BC Games represent one step toward the dream of becoming a World Cup or national team competitor. The BC Games organizers are expecting more than 2,400 participants in Port Alberni.
"The Mt. Washington Ski Club has put a tremendous amount of work into these Games and we can expect a great race," said Gordie Bowles, who is acting as the Provincial Advisor for the Alpine events at the Games. "These Games will give our athletes the opportunity to take a step forward in our sport and at the same time, expose them to other sports and athletes. It promises to be an event they will never forget."
The Alpine events, which will all take place at Mt. Washington, will feature a Giant Slalom on Friday, as well as a Slalom and Dual "Super Slalom" fun race on Saturday. Stay tuned to www.bcalpine.com for results from the event.
